La storia
Bulas Family Estates traces its modern history to 1951, when José Bulas Cruz bought Quinta da Costa de Baixo on the right bank of the Douro in the Cima Corgo, where the river Ceira meets the Douro near Gouvinhas, in Sabrosa. Records of winemaking at this spot date back to 1256, and a second estate, Quinta FozCeira, sits below it at the water's edge. The business remains family-owned, run today by siblings Maria Gabriel and José Afonso Bulas Cruz, and José Bulas Cruz's handwriting still forms the Bulas name on the labels.
The vineyards hold the Douro's top class A rating, with old vines of many native varieties alongside Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Wines are made in small lots, and the range includes aged Tawny Ports such as the 20 and 30 Year Old, as well as Douro DOC wines.
